A Hometown Home Run
In 2007, the City of Sugar Land launched a plan to drive economic growth by investing in local entertainment and amenities. As part of this vision, the City and local developers worked together to build Constellation Field, home of the Skeeters, with $36 million of public-private funding organized by Sugar Land Economic Development and the goal to one day serve as home to a Triple-A baseball team. In 2021, that dream came true after the Sugar Land Skeeters were officially acquired by the Houston Astros and named the Triple A affiliate of the Major League franchise. The City of Sugar Land’s professionalism as well as the ease of doing business in Sugar Land were major selling points in the Astros’ decision. As part of the Astros partnership, the MLB team and City will make a continued investment in Constellation Field to continue to elevate the stadium into a first-class venue for players and fans.
Elevated Recreation Drives Economic Growth
The partnership between the Skeeters and the Astros is a major victory for the City of Sugar Land that is estimated to generate $7.7 million in economic impact per year, for a total economic impact of $403.7 million over 30 years and create at least 30 new jobs at the stadium in addition to the 100 subcontracting jobs needed for the renovations to Constellation Field. The Skeeters and Astros’ new partnership and all the benefits that come with it will further establish Sugar Land as a city invested in its residents with a quality of life unmatched by any other suburb in the Houston metro area. Sugar Land restaurants, hotels and retail shops anticipate a major uptick in business as baseball-goers seek additional leisure activities on gameday. The Triple A affiliation is expected to bring an additional $2 million in economic impact every season compared to the economic benefit of the independent league Skeeters’ season prior to the affiliation, leading to increased interest from local developers in properties adjacent to Constellation Field. Projects currently in the works include experiential food and beverage and entertainment uses.
