Sugar Land celebrates the grand opening of first parklet with ribbon cutting event

Sugar Land, TX – The City of Sugar Land hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting event for the City’s first public parklet at The Shops at Williams Trace shopping center on October 27, 2021.

The project was initiated by the City of Sugar Land’s Office of Economic Development and is just one of many initiatives that have been implemented under the #AllInForSLTX program. As part of #AllInForSLTX, the city sought out placemaking opportunities to create innovative activations that would increase business resiliency in the post pandemic environment.

Parklets are public seating platforms that convert curbside parking spaces into engaging community spaces. The City’s newly installed and sustainable parklet was constructed using a modified shipping container and also features fresh greenery in self watering planters, string lighting and colorful aesthetics. By building the parklet, the city has been able to create a placemaking opportunity and activate an underutilized space that provides a safe outdoor dining option for residents and visitors to the city to enjoy.

“The Sugar Land Office of Economic Development continues to seek innovative and unique ways to support the Sugar Land business community and ensure that our local economy thrives post-pandemic”.
Elizabeth Huff, Director of Economic Development

The success of the parklet project is the culmination of a public-private partnership between the city and several community partners. The project was funded by the Sugar Land 4B Corporation, and its beautiful design and construction was spearheaded by local firm Telloc Landscape and Construction. Additionally, the shopping center’s management company, Whitestone REIT, enthusiastically supported the City’s vision for the parklet and provided the space for its construction.
