Founded as a sugar plantation in the early 1800s, the area was built as a prosperous trade center for the surrounding agricultural region. The developing sugar cane and cotton farms supplied leading industries and provided progressive growth, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Sugar Land in 1959. Founded on venture, today’s Sugar Land honors its enterprising heritage with a commitment to its corporate neighbors and partners.

Today, the City of Sugar Land is a full-service municipality proving award-winning police and fire protection, crime rates about half of national averages, outstanding services with state-of-the-art facilities and utilities, an award-wining airport and top-rated parks and recreation facilities. On November 21, 2007 Sugar Land was named the fifth safest city in the nation by CQ Press and has received further national recognition as first in the southwest and 3rd in the nation for the Best Place to Live by CNN/Money and Money Magazine.

Throughout the city’s growth, the city of Sugar Land has taken proactive steps to ensure continued high quality development. Sugar Land is wired for the future, having worked with the private sector to make substantial investments in redundant electrical capacity, natural gas lines, telecommunications infrastructure and high-speed IT access. Sugar Land has superior flow-control systems and has proactively secured water rights for the next 30 years, ensuring continued provision and progress.
